AFRL bars to bati program

The concept of the Australian Fijian Rugby League team is part of our vision for the future long term development of the code in Australia and is designed to benefit players of Fijian heritage currently playing or wishing to play Rugby League and residing in Australia.

Established in 2003, the Australian Fijian Rugby League team has quickly developed into a more than credible international side, competing in a number of events to date, which include the Battle of the Bati Series, Cabramatta World 9's, Kooga Shield, and also a successful tour of the UK.

The concept of the AFRL is to help promote and foster the Fijian rugby league players that currently play rugby league throughout Australia. In addition we also identify talent and offer players from Fiji the opportunity to come and further their careers here in Australia and abroad.

As part of this process a thorough database has been compiled to identify as many players of Fijian heritage as possible, with a view of these players developing along a pathway which will hopefully lead from club side, to Australian Fijians, to full Fiji Bati (national side) status.

As the side is still very much in its infancy, the selectors and coaching staff of the Australian Fijian side have made a decision to promote young players, with a view of these players representing Fiji Bati in time for the World Cup, due to be held in 2013.

AFRL can proudly say they have had a number of successes with a number of highly talented young players that have come through their system and are currently training with NRL squads. Some of which include:

Wes Naiqama - Newcastle Knights
Akuila Uate - Newcastle Knights
Aaron Groom - Canterbury Bulldogs
Daryl Millard - Canterbury Bulldogs
Jarryd Hayne - Parramatta Eels
Kevin Naiqama - Newcastle Knights and
Daniel Rauicava - Canterbury Bulldogs
