AUSTRALIAN FIJIAN RUGBY LEAGUE (AFRL)
Tuesday May 18, 2010
AFRL Icons gear up for fights of their lives.

Two of the AFRL’s most popular members get ready for the fights of their lives over the next few weeks. Kali Meehan and Puna Rasaubale are both at opposite ends of their boxing journeys but are at crucial points to achieving there ultimate goals in becoming world champions.

For AFRL membership ambassador Kali Meehan he is one step away from his dream of a shot at a world title he was robbed of against Lamon Brewster in 2008. A fight where even Brewster’s father told his son he should walk over and give his belt to his opponent when the decision was handed down. A world title eliminator this Sunday morning against Ruslan Chagaev (live on Main Event) to earn him a mandatory shot against David Haye is the one thing that stands between him and another shot at his dream. For the former road worker and painter this is another step in what has been a long and frustrating wait for a shot at redemption. The man they call “Mean Hands” Meehan will hopefully come back from this fight not only with a world title shot looming but also a new career path launching his new business “Mean Hands Fitness”.

At the other end of the scale is Puna Rasaubale who will turn out to make his pro debut on the Ryan Waters card at Sharks Leagues club on Friday June 4. The man who was selected as Australian Fijian vice-captain for the inaugural Battle of the Bati in 2009 and then going on to fulfill his dream with the Fiji Bati at the Pacific Cup, this fight will be the first of a long hard road to eventually one day knock on the door of a world title just as his idol Kali Meehan will do on Sunday. To start his pro career well by winning on June 4 is the first of many steps to climb the Cruiserweight tree. Having already represented Fiji as an amateur at the Commonwealth games at the age of 19 many good judges including Meehan himself are predicting big things for the former Rooster, Dragon and Shark.

The AFRL would like to wish two of their favourite sons all the best of luck and urge the entire Australian Fijian community to support them in their respective fights.
