Moore Park Broncos finish regular season Minor Premiers

AFRL affiliated club the Moore Park Broncos finished the regular season of the South Sydney Juniors ‘A’ Grade competition top of the ladder with 38 – 18 win over Maroubra Lions on Sunday 17th August. The Moore Park outfit captain-coached by former Sydney Roosters, NZ Warriors and Warrignton player Nathan Wood only lost once all season to see them secure the Minor Premiership two points clear of Coogee-Randwick Wombats.

Eight Australian Fijians – Esala Vute, Hamilton Hughes, Gilbert Modrau, Alfred McGowan, Sam Rainimi, Nacanieli Kini Kini, James Lagiloa and Rob Kois have all been contributors to Moore Park’s season so far. This along with other former NRL players Garth Wood, Nathan DeBartolo and Darrell Trindall have made Moore Park the team to beat in the 100th year of the Souths Juniors A Grade competition.

Moore Park have always been one of the stronger teams in the A Grade competition. Moore Park officially became a sponsor of the AFRL at the beginning of 2007 to try and attract more players from the Fijian Community particularly the younger kids to try and build more teams in the younger grades. Moore Park has always had a history of Fijians playing for the club. AFRL Board Members Steve Driscoll and Manoa Thompson both played for Moore Park, Chairman James Pickering is also helping with the coaching staff and AFRL founder Phil Brown is a current committee member.

Moore Park Secretary Billy Spiro said “Hopefully off the back of us having such a good year this year we will be able to attract more of the Fijian community to come and play with the club particularly in the lower grades. The Fijian boys have really been a big asset to us this year and it will be wonderful for us to win the A Grade in the centenary year and make the club even stronger in seasons to come.”

Seven of the eight Australian Fijians playing for Moore Park have been picked in the preliminary squad to tour Great Britain. The AFRL and Moore Park is confident in bringing more of the younger boys to play at the club particularly with the AFRL fielding an under 16’s team in the NSWRL Development Cup to be held in October just prior to the World Cup kicking off.

Moore Park A grade will play the Coogee Dolphins this Sunday for a spot in the A grade Grand Final and the AFRL would really love the Fijian Community to come and support them at Erskineville Oval at 2.30pm. AFRL Board Member Manoa Thompson said “They have been our longest serving sponsor and we should all get out there this week and support the club and the boys. That’s the least we (AFRL) can do for them”.
